Head of Liverpool Ocular Oncology Service receives prestigious award

21/5/2012

Congratulations to Consultant Ophthalmologist, Professor Bertil Damato, who delivered the ‘Ashton Lecture’ at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress 2012.

The prestigious lecture, held at the Arena & Convention Centre Liverpool, is highly regarded amongst peers on an international level. The award was presented in recognition of Professor Damato’s pioneering treatment of ocular melanomas, particularly local resection, brachytherapy with eccentrically-placed ruthenium plaques and proton beam radiotherapy of iris melanoma; in addition to the genetic typing of uveal melanomas into routine clinical practice thereby enhancing prognostication.

Professor Damato has received a number of awards in different countries over the years. He has served as Hon Secretary and President of the European Ophthalmic Oncology Group, President of the European Vision and Eye Research Association and President of the International Society of Ocular Oncology. He has published approximately 200 peer reviewed articles and authored or contributed to several textbooks.
