LOORG and Unilever Great Walk 2022
On Friday 8th July most of the LOORG team went down to London to take part in The Great Walk 2022, hosted by Unilever with proceeds going to LOORG.
It was a beautifully sunny day which everyone was relieved about, some might say it was too hot.
There were two different distances, a full marathon and a half marathon, the team chose which they wished to do and set off. They were able to choose to run or walk too so everyone could be involved. Everyone will have met their step target, Sarah did nearly 70,000 steps!
Everyone managed to finish and everyone was very proud of each other. Some of the team stayed down in London for some sightseeing for a good end to their Great Walk weekend.
Well done all!

WALKING FOR RENEE 2020 - THANK YOU UNILEVER
On 3rd September 2020 Unilever invited employees to re-create last year's hugely successful charity walk in remembrance of Renée Metroka who sadly lost her fight with ocular cancer in Jan 2018.
The 'Virtual' Great Walk 2020 challenge was to walk a half or full marathon. Colleagues up and down the country walked independently or in small groups...Here are a few snaps of LOORG members taking part in a half marathon walk around Liverpool.
We can't thank Unilever fundraisers and their donors enough for their continued support which is making such a significant difference to our research group. Please see link for Unilever's full story https://www.justgiving.com/team/TheGreatWalk2020

The Liverpool Ocular Oncology Research Group wishes to thank all of the supporters of the Charity "Wendy's Wish", who recently donated £10,000 towards our research into uveal (intraocular) melanoma.

The Charity provides support to cancer patients and their families, to create memories or to give treats and provide a little bit of comfort during difficult circumstances.
Over the last few years, Wendy's Wish has also sponsored the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre at the Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust, where Wendy was initially treated.
Thank you again to Wendy's Wish from all the team here at LOORG for your very generous donation.

THE GREAT WALK - UNILEVER MARATHON WALK RAISES RECORD DONATION FOR LOORG 2019
On 3rd July 2019 approximately 200 Unilever employees and supporters embarked on a Marathon walk from Greenwich boat club to Richmond Rugby club in memory of their dear colleague Renee Metroka.
They have raised a staggering £60k
Renee was an inspiration for so many across Unilever, with her never give up attitude and positive outlook on life. She originally battled with rare ocular cancer in 2014 which unfortunately spread to her Liver and she sadly lost her fight through complications in January 2018.
Unilever are raising funds for LOORG a charity close to Renee’s heart helping to fund much needed research into Ocular cancer and how to treat it. Rare cancers like these are often overlooked when trying to raise funds. www.justgiving.com/companyteams/thegreatwalk2019

'Lands End to John O'Groats' for OcuMelUK - 11-25 July 2015
Peter Hasting and his friend will be embarking on a cycle ride of 1000 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats on the 11th July 2015.
Pete decided to do this to support another charity called Ocumel UK in honour of his Wife's dear friend Jacqui Quinn who was 7 months pregnant with her second child when she was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma in 2013. Her daughter was born 3 weeks early, but healthy. Six weeks after the birth Jacqui underwent major eye surgery which removed her left eye, tissue and muscle.
In February 2015 a routine MRI revealed the cancer had spread to her liver.
OcuMel UK aims to support patients, like Jacqui, and their families by providing accurate, up-to-date information and emotional support via its website and helpline.

Patient Skydives for ETRF - Saturday 30th May 2015
Derek Tickle was treated for ocular melanoma in Liverpool and has decided to do a skydive to raise funds for the Eye Tumour Research Fund.
Derek says ' After a routine eye test in January 2013 I was sent for further test and within weeks I was diagnosed with eye cancer in my right eye. I was in total shock but fortunately I was under the excellent care of St Paul's Eye hospital. After several operations including plaque radiotherapy I am now in remission and have pretty much the full sight in my eye. I would like to raise as much money as possible for The Eye Tumour Research Fund at St Paul's Eye Hospital, Liverpool. It would be my way of thanking them for the care and attention I and countless others have received.'

'See the Future' charity donates £2500 to Eye Tumour Research!
See The Future is an awareness charity of how important it is to go to the opticians, not just for vision purposes but other eye health issues that can be detected. It's all about opening eyes to a better health. The charity raises money to help research departments across the UK, these departments are so badly in need of the specialist equipment that is needed to diagnose and to pioneer new drug & surgical treatments to prevent blindness and to develop new treatments that help millions of people who suffer from sight-threatening diseases like rare eye cancers, this is why See The Futures donations have come to Liverpool.
Leanne Greengrass set up the charity as her mum suffered with Ocular Melanoma and was a patient in Liverpool. Leanne is passionate about the charity and raising funds to support local projects, including organising summer balls, race nights, and football tournaments to raise funds.
You can visit the See the Future website by clicking here.
We thank Leanne and all involved in the very generous donation which will support vital research in ocular melanoma.
