The Douglas Cyclotron Unit at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre featured in the news earlier this month, following the story of former seafarer Michael Johnson, who was diagnosed with eye cancer at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital back in 2010.
The Daily Express raised awareness about the benefits of proton beam, a specialist type of radiotherapy that can target and kill tumours without damaging vision, and the science behind the beam.
More than 2000 patients have been treated at the centre since the early Nineties with different types of eye cancer. The cyclotron unit is currently the only facility in the UK capable of this type of radiotherapy to the eye...
Dr Andrzej Kacperek, Head of the Douglas Cyclotron, stated:
“In some cases proton beam therapy is the only viable treatment. Before it was introduced, removing the eye was often the only option. It is not a new treatment but the technology has improved enormously."
