Molecular characteristics of metastatic liver lesions in uveal melanoma: the search for therapeutic targets

Mr Andrew Dodson

Prof. Bertil Damato

Summary

At present little is known about the characteristics of uveal melanoma cells that leave the primary tumour site and are able to grow in the liver. It is essential that we begin to investigate this area as at present there are little in the way of therapeutic options for patients with metastatic disease. The ultimate goal of this study, therefore, is to identify molecular pathways in the diseased liver that can be targeted therapeutically, to prevent or slow tumour cell growth. To achieve this, the study examines; (1) the timing of dissemination of uveal melanoma cells from the primary tumour to secondary sites, (2) the biological characteristics of the metastases compared with the primary tumour.
