Please note that two ocular oncology fellowship vacancies have become available at the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre, Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
These posts are ideally suited to ophthalmologists nearing the completion of their training or already in possession of CCST. It would also be of interest to experienced ophthalmologists from abroad. It offers post-accreditation experience beyond traditional UK registrar rotations for ophthalmologists wishing to specialise in the management of adult patients with ocular tumours at Consultant level.
The Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre (LOOC) is a tertiary referral, supraregional service specialising in the management of adult patients with ocular tumours. It receives more than 500 new patients each year from all over the British Isles. About 50% of patients have uveal melanoma, the remainder having conditions such as metastasis, haemangioma and a wide variety of other tumours. Treatment modalities include ruthenium and iodine plaque radiotherapy, proton beam radiotherapy, trans-scleral and trans-retinal local resection, transpupillary thermotherapy, photodynamic therapy and enucleation.
The successful applicant will work as part of a highly skilled team and in a stimulating environment, with plenty of opportunities for surgical experience, ocular ultrasonography, teaching and clinical and basic science research. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career within the subspecialty.
The duties of the post will also involve clinical treatment and operating sessions, ward rounds audit, research and administration. Attachment will be to the team of Professor Damato with precise details to be arranged as appropriate following discussion with Professor Damato. This is a full time fellowship for six months.
