The Liverpool Ocular Oncology Research Group attended the 40th Meeting of the OOG earlier this month, in Paris, France.
Sponsored by ALCON, Eckert & Ziegler and FCI, the meeting was run for the first time in conjunction with the Institut Curie Hospital’s international course on uveal melanoma, and focussed on uveal melanoma biopsies.
Professor Sarah Coupland, LOORG Lead and OOG President, opened the meeting on Friday 9th March, 2012.
The OOG aims to-
1. improve the practice of ophthalmic oncology in Europe
2. develop an internet-based data system to share scientific information
3. promote education relating to ophthalmic oncology
4. conduct multicentre research studies
5. organise conferences relating to ophthalmic oncology.
Dr. Sarah Lake also presented her work to the group, and spoke about the ‘comparison of formalin-fixed and snap-frozen samples analysed by MLPA for prognostic testing in uveal melanoma’, whilst Professor Bertil Damato spoke about uveal melanoma clinical aspects, and exoresection.
Dr’s Helen Kalirai and Martina Angi presented at the Curie/OOG poster session, were they are looking into:
VEGFxxx and VEGFxxxb levels in vitreous of uveal melanoma patients (Angi)
Loss of TIMP3 protein correlates with reduced survival in patients with ocular adnexal lymphoma (Kalirai).
Furthermore, as organised by Dr's Sarah Lake, Helen Kalirai and Daniel Briscoe, the first official Young Investigators Meeting (YIN) meeting was held on the Thursday 8th March, and was a huge success.
Thank you to Dr. Rana'a Al-Jamal for the wonderful photography taken during the meeting.
